The Hickory County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is a locally led group that helps county residents better care for natural resources. The SWCD is concerned with protecting and enhancing soil and water resources in the county.

SWCD can assist landowners and farm managers in the following areas:

SWCD practices conserving natural resources such as soil, water, forest and wildlife for future generations to enjoy. They educate landowners about how proper planting and land management will provide high production and environmental benefits.

Because Hickory County is mostly pastureland and timberland, SWCD's main conservation initiatives and cost share programs address grazing systems, livestock water, cool season and warm season grass establishment and management, nutrient management and riparian corridor management. Two special projects address some of these concerns in watersheds in the district.

SWCD offers special programs to assist local landowners in conservation and land management. These programs are available through money collected from a parks and soils sales tax. The money is used to help landowners control soil erosion. Through the cost share program, the public can receive up to 75% reimbursement for expenses after project completion and certification. To be eligible for cost share assistance through the district, one must meet certain qualifications. Please contact our office for more information.

SWCD also rents conservation equipment to landowners for their farms. Landowners may contact the SWCD office for more information or to schedule equipment rental.
