Local News

Over the years, a number of local newspapers have served Hickory County. As early as 1885, The Index and the Hickory County Herald provided news for the area. In 1886, the Hickory County Democrat began reporting from Wheatland, and nine years later in 1895, the Gazette provided county news. The Hickory County Democrat and the Index-Gazette both wrote stories of local interest in 1898. The Standard opened in Weaubleau for a short stretch in 1901, and the Hickory County Republican reported for a few months in 1903.

Today Hickory County is served exclusively by The Index, a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 4,500. Francis Marion Wilson started The Index in 1885, and it is still a family business four generations later. The Index covers a variety of local news, including school activities and sports, local events, health news, reports on local sports, health and economic issues, letters to the editor, an editorial and a featured history picture.
