What are the qualifications for staff?
Every Head Start classroom is staffed with at least one teacher who has obtained a child development associate credential or an associate's degree or higher in early childhood education or a related field. In addition:
- All Head Start drivers are CDL licensed
- All Head Start staff are CPR and First Aid certified
What are the qualifications to participate in Head Start?
Participation eligibility is based on age and income.
Does Head Start provide transportation?
WCMCAA Head Start makes reasonable efforts to provide transportation to Head Start preschool children (3-5 years). Transportation is not provided to infants and toddlers or to full day preschool children.
Is Head Start curriculum developmentally appropriate?
Yes. WCMCAA Head Start uses the Creative Curriculum for infants through three-year olds and the High Scope Curriculum for children age 3 to 5. Both curriculums are based on the following:
- Encouraging relationships between caregivers/teachers, their families and the community
- Planning and evaluating lessons
- Individualizing teaching plans
- Creating a welcoming environment
- Ensuring children's safety
- Promoting children's health
- Guiding children's behavior
- Incorporating daily routines
What are Head Start participants required to do?
Participants are required to attend class daily and stay current on physical exams, well baby check-ups, dental exams, lead testing, hemoglobin testing, immunizations and any recommended follow ups.
How will my child benefit from attending Head Start?
Your child will benefit from attending Head Start in a variety of ways. Skills children learn include:
- Getting along with others
- Sharing
- Taking turns
- Problem solving
- Developing self-confidence
- Practicing self-discipline
- Brushing teeth
- Toileting
- Handwashing
- Serving themselves at meal time
- Following routines
- Pre-reading/pre-writing
- Math
- Science
